My name is Alunya Clark. I am a 47-year-old woman on a journey of healing and transformation. For over two decades, I was married to a military service member/veteran who battled PTSD and substance misuse following four combat deployments. Throughout this time, my experience as a military/veteran spouse involved deep love, overwhelming challenges, and moments of profound strength. This blog reflects my healing journey for military/ veteran spouses and aims to support to others who face similar struggles.

Now, this blog marks a new chapter in my life—one focused on healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. After leaving my marriage and coping with the loss of my former spouse, I have come to appreciate the power of community support. In fact, the strength we gain through shared understanding is immeasurable. Through this platform, I hope to offer hope, encouragement, and a sense of unity to others on a similar healing journey for military/veteran spouses.

Understanding the Unique Challenges Faced by Military/Veteran Spouses

Being a military or veteran spouse is a unique experience that requires immense strength. Initially, military spouses hold down the home front while their partners serve the country. However, the challenges do not end with their return home. In fact, when that role transitions to a veteran spouse, the challenges often grow, especially when PTSD and substance misuse enter the pictures.

In my marriage, I confronted PTSD and substance misuse firsthand. The person I loved fought a battle I couldn’t fully grasp. At times, I felt isolated, powerless, and scared. Even though there were moments of deep connection, there were also times of despair and frustration. I struggled with feelings of anger, sadness, and resentment, which I tried to suppress to be the supportive spouse my husband needed. My healing journey for military/veteran spouses taught me that we can navigate these challenges with the right support.

My Journey: From Pain to Empowerment

In 2020, after 22 years as a military/veteran spouse, I decided to walk away from my marriage. This difficult decision marked a turning point in my journey of healing and self-discovery. Moreover, it allowed me to reclaim parts of myself that I had lost over the years and to explore who I was beyond my role as a spouse. However, just as I began to rebuild my life, my former spouse passed away in 2022, which added another layer to my healing journey.

Losing him, even after our marriage ended, caused me profound pain. Consequently, it forced me to confront the complexities of love, loss, and forgiveness. Through this difficult process, I discovered a strength within myself that I never knew existed. I learned to prioritize my mental and emotional health. As a result, I was not only healing myself but also honoring the memory of the love we once shared.

Undoubtedly, my faith in God made this journey possible. It acted as a guiding light through healing from trauma. In fact, my faith gave me peace and hope, reminding me that even during pain, there is a purpose and a plan for my life. Furthermore, in besides my faith, my family and friends provided unwavering support. They offered love, encouragement, and a safe space for me to grieve, heal, and grow.

My journey has been one of immense growth, but it hasn’t been easy. At times, I felt lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to move forward. Nevertheless, with each step, I found a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of who I am. This blog is my way of sharing that journey with you, and ultimately, I hope that it might offer comfort and guidance to others walking a similar path.

Breaking the Silence: The Importance of Speaking Out

One of the most difficult aspects of being a military/veteran spouse is the silence surrounding our struggles. In many cases, seeking help often carries a stigma, and many fear that speaking out could somehow diminish the sacrifices of their loved ones or reflect poorly on them. Nevertheless, speaking out is an important step in every healing journey for military/ veteran spouses.

Eventually, we all reach a breaking point. When that moment arrives, we face decisions that affect not only our lives but also the lives of those we care about. Therefore, it’s important to remember that your feelings are valid, and seeking help is okay.

Through this blog, I aim to create a space where we can openly discuss these challenges, share our stories, offer support, and begin to heal together. Ultimately, by speaking out, we empower ourselves and pave the way for others to do the same.
